Leonardo da Vinci was an Italian scientist and artist, born during the Renaissance era, is widely regarded as the most talented industrial inventor and designer, including many aspects of modern science and technology.

This kit is a replica of da Vinci's Aerial Screw design, a forerunner of the modern helicopter. While structurally unable to fly, da Vinci's design stimulated much curiosity about the possibility ofvertical flight. A mechanical spring controls rotation and vertical movement of the fuselage.

This helical design based on a 1480's drawing takes the idea of a vertical flight machine powered by a pilot using his arms and legs. During takeoff, today's helicopters use a similar vertical rotation concept. It demonstrates a combination of natural and mechanical movements. A mechanical spring controls rotation and vertical movement of the wings.
